Newport exhibit has bright ideas

Newport’s Olive Street Gallery will play host to a collision of mythology, street art and modern expression at the Thursday, May 28, opening of “Cultural Transformation,” a new exhibition by artist Rip Cronk.

The opening reception will have refreshments, music and an artist talk by Cronk beginning at 5:30 pm.

The exhibition features bold, energetic paintings filled with fractured forms, dynamic movement and hybrid human-animal figures influenced by cubism, futurism, graffiti and cartoon imagery. Cronk’s work blends classical artistic ideas with contemporary visual culture, creating paintings that feel equally at home in galleries and on city walls.

Fractured planes. Dynamic diagonals. A restless sense of forward motion. Cronk’s paintings are not subtle — they pulse. The figures throughout the exhibition serve as symbols of what Cronk describes as “an implied but undefined cultural mythology,” intended to connect emotionally and intuitively with viewers rather than through literal interpretation. His work explores transformation, identity and the evolving role of art within society.

Cronk studied at the University of Florida and the University of New Mexico before building a career that moved beyond the traditional gallery world into public art and mural work, including projects in Hawaii and Switzerland. His recent work continues his longtime interest in the psychology of art and visual experience.

“Animals and figures full of movement and performing personality will feel right at home on the walls of Olive Street Gallery,” said Newport Visual Arts Center Director Chasse Davidson. “What more fitting place for them than within our lively performing arts center?”

The May 28 reception runs from 5 to 7 pm at Olive Street Gallery, located inside the Newport Performing Arts Center at 777 W Olive Street. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, from 10 am to 3 pm. The exhibit remains on display through the summer. For more information, go to coastarts.org or call 541-265-2787.
