Life, and all that jazz

The Lincoln City Cultural Center will be all jazzed up when international vocalist Halie Loren returns on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Loren will be joined by pianist John C. O'Leary III and bassist Rob Kohler for an intimate program blending jazz, pop and multilingual influences.

Across 11 albums, Loren has built an international following, earning awards at home and abroad and reaching the top of jazz charts in Japan and Canada. Her debut jazz album, “They Oughta Write a Song” was named Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year at the JPF Independent Music Awards, launching a touring career that has taken her to venues across four continents.

Loren continues to balance touring with new releases. She debuted the original single “The Bells Were Silent” in December and followed it with a fresh interpretation of “On a Clear Day” in January.

O’Leary is a Mexican-American pianist whose work reflects themes of immigration, collaboration and scientific inquiry. Trained as a neuroscientist, he approaches composition and improvisation as parallel forms of experimentation and has performed with artists including Dick Hyman, Shaun Martin, Renée Fleming and Shai Maestro.

Kohler is a bassist, composer and educator who has been a central figure in the Pacific Northwest music scene for more than four decades. He has appeared on more than 100 recordings and gained early international attention performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival. A longtime collaborator with Loren, he is also known for his work as a teacher and author.

Audiences in Lincoln City will be among the first to hear a new work scheduled for release just days before the concert.

“Halie Loren brings an extraordinary sense of connection to her performances,” said Programs Director Jason Corso. “I’m especially excited that we’ll be one of the first venues to see her perform a brand-new single she’s planning to release the week before our concert.”

Reserved seats are $35 for adults, $32 for seniors and students and $20 for kids.

Wednesday’s concert begins at 7 pm at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, located at 540 NE Hwy. 101. For more information, go to lincolncity-culturalcenter.org or call 541-994-9994.
