Get an early start for late summer walks

Belted Kingfisher by Ruth Shelly

Seven Capes Bird Alliance will lead bird walks on two less-traveled trails that promise great scenery and, hopefully, beautiful late summer weather this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13.

Friday, Sept. 12 • 9 to 11 am.

Cascade Head Interpretive Wayside

The wayside is the start point of a woodland road that’s part of the Salmon River Estuary Restoration Area. Walkers will look for migrating warblers and other songbirds.

The group will meet at the wayside on N Fraser Road just north of Lincoln City off Hwy 101.

Saturday, Sept. 13 • 10 am to noon

Sitka Sedge State Natural Area

The area has a variety of coastal habitats that are teeming with wildlife. The trail winds through tidal flats, saltwater marshes and forested wetlands to the ocean offering the chance to see songbirds and shorebirds.

The group will meet in the parking area off Sandlake Road.

All Seven Capes Bird Alliance walks are free, family-friendly, easy to moderately easy and no pre-registration or experience is required. Binoculars and guidebooks are provided. Walks are held rain or shine; dress appropriately for coastal weather and muddy trails.
