Are you up for some opera on Saturday?

Immerse yourself in one of opera’s great love stories when Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” is streamed live to the Newport Performing Arts Center this Saturday, May 2.

Streaming from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the production brings the scale and emotion of grand opera to the big screen in high definition.

Based on Alexander Pushkin’s classic verse novel, “Eugene Onegin” tells the story of Tatiana, an idealistic young woman whose heartfelt declaration of love is rejected by the worldly aristocrat Onegin, who realizes too late what he has lost.

The role of Tatiana is filled by soprano Asmik Grigorian, following her celebrated company debut in “Madama Butterfly.” Baritone Iurii Samoilov reprises his portrayal of Onegin.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Deborah Warner, the Met’s evocative production has been praised by The Telegraph for offering a “beautifully detailed reading of Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance.”

Performed in Russian with English subtitles, the opera runs roughly four hours and five minutes with two intermissions.

Saturday’s screening begins at 10 am at the Newport Performing Arts Center, located at 777 W Olive Street. Tickets range from $12 to $28. For more information, go to coastarts.org/events/met-onegin or call 541-265-2782.
