Toledo hosts First Weekend

The arts community of Toledo will again open its doors to the public for First Weekend this  Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3.

The Yaquina River Museum of Art continues its Permanent Collection Exhibit, displaying selected works of Becky Miller and Colleen Caubin.

Miller's "Life in Toledo" is a quintessential vignette of the town, depicting the working lumber yard seemingly in motion as the Yaquina River carries a boating fisherman further down the scene and a prolific apple tree begins to fill the foreground. Miller, now located in Reno, Nevada, is a well-known artist who lived in Toledo for nearly a decade. Recognized for her vivid palette and unique visual perspective, she seeks to change how others view the world around them.

Complementing Miller's work is the lush and dreamy art of Colleen Caubin. "Wild Sweet Peas and Wildflowers" is a work from Caubin's solo exhibit with the Yaquina River Museum of Art in 2022. Caubin is a highly admired painter whose still life and plein air works attract viewers everywhere, including her display of works at For Arts Sake Gallery and the Yaquina Art Gallery in Newport.

The museum will also be displaying original work by its late founder Michael Gibbons, including "Dawn Near Eddyville," a striking piece showing a massive spruce dwarfing a cattle barn in the misty Coastal Range.

The Yaquina River Museum of Art is located at 140 NE Alder Street, open noon to 4 pm during First Weekend. For more information, go to yaquinarivermuseumofart.com

Just up the street, Ivan Kelly Studio & Gallery will display works including "Haystack Rock from Atop Cape Kiwanda," an oil painting depicting the iconic rock formation emerging from the glittering sea.

Ivan Kelly Studio & Gallery is located at 207 E Graham Street, open from noon to 4 pm both days. For more information, go to ivankelly.com.

Posh & Polished Salon will be featuring the works of four local artisans — Holli McRae, Jamaica Tull, Teryl Wallace and Susan Berry. Posh & Polished Salon is located at 207 E Hwy. 20.

On Main Street, Bruster's Whimsy Game Cafe will display imaginative dioramas for visitors to enjoy. Located at 139 S Main Street, the cafe is open from 1 to 5 pm on Saturday, and 1 to 7 pm on Sunday.
