Youth symphony festival wraps up season

Help wrap up the Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival’s 2026 season with style at a free chamber concert featuring violinist Hal Grossman, pianist Hung-Yun Chu and the Milwaukie High School/Academy of the Arts Chamber Orchestra, at Newport’s Atonement Lutheran Church this Sunday, April 26.
Grossman has earned acclaim for his vibrant tone and technical command, with honors including the Grand Award at the Lima Young Artist Competition, a silver medal at the International Stulberg String Competition and first prizes at both the Cleveland Quartet Competition and the National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.
Chu, a native of Taiwan, teaches at Lane Community College and works with the University of Oregon Choral Department, Eugene Symphony Chorus and Oregon Bach Festival.
The Grossman-Chu duo will perform “Sonatina in G Major, Op. 100” by Antonín Dvořák, “Liebeslied” by Fritz Kreisler and “Salut d’Amour, Op. 12” by Edward Elgar.
The Milwaukie High School/Academy of the Arts Chamber Orchestra, directed by Anna Trobaugh, will open the concert. The Portland-area ensemble is known for its strong musicianship, collaborative spirit and students who are active across multiple disciplines including band, choir and theater.
Sunday’s concert begins at 2 pm at Atonement Lutheran Church, located at 2315 N Hwy. 101. Admission is free, with donations welcomed. Nonperishable food items will also be collected for the Newport Food Pantry.
