The place is Newport, the time is now.

Explore the layered story of Yaquina Head through the work of local artist Carol Shenk in “Place & Time,” a new exhibit opening at the Newport Visual Arts Center this Sunday, March 8.

The opening reception, with music and light refreshments, is at 2 pm on Sunday.

The exhibit reflects Shenk’s 2025 residency at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. Drawing on her background as an archivist, Shenk examines the interplay between the coastal landscape, lighthouse architecture, optical science and the human stories connected to the site.

“Carol brings a unique perspective to her work, blending artistic expression with a researcher’s eye for detail,” said Chasse Davidson, Visual Arts Center director. “This exhibit is a creative and powerful example of visual storytelling, capturing the silent, shifting dialogue between the natural world and the people who have called Yaquina Head home.”

The show highlights Shenk’s range across multiple media, including block prints, mixed-media collage, fiber-based assemblage, book arts, paintings and drawings. Her recent work has appeared at the Newport Visual Arts Center’s Fiber Fest, Oregon State University’s Giustina Gallery and the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center.

“Place & Time” will be on display through May 3 at the Newport Visual Arts Center, located at 777 NW Beach Drive and open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 pm. For more information, go to coastarts.com or call 541-265-2787.
