Some (porch)light entertainment

Music from around the world will fill the sanctuary at the First Presbyterian Church of Newport this Sunday, May 17, when the Porchlight Singers present “A Joyful Noise,” the ensemble’s fourth annual Spring Concert.

The performance will feature a mix of sacred and secular music spanning folk traditions, Broadway tunes and songs both ancient and modern. Selections will include African, Israeli and Finnish music, with many pieces performed in their original languages and accompanied by guest musicians.

The Porchlight Singers began during the social-distancing days of the COVID-19 pandemic as a small vocal group of five women. The ensemble has since grown to include 19 singers.

Audiences can expect everything from quiet and reflective pieces to lively, joyful numbers — and guests are encouraged to wear something colorful for the occasion.

Sunday’s concert begins at 2 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Newport, located at 227 NE 12th Street. Admission is by donation.
