She’s an expert. Period.

The Coastal Arts Guild’s Tea and Talk series might have a new name, but plenty of tea will still be spilled by interesting people on interesting topics at the upcoming “Talk About Art” events.

Historical fashion and textile design will be the subject at the Newport Visual Arts Center this Thursday, Feb. 19.

Guest speaker Lisa Emond, a retired doctor and longtime costumer, will share insights from more than four decades of creating garments for historical reenactments with the Society for Creative Anachronism, for Renaissance faires and for events inspired by the Regency era familiar to readers of Jane Austen.

Several of Emond’s creations will be on display and she will also model examples of her work. Anyone interested in sewing, design and historical clothing will find plenty to spark the imagination.

Emond began making costumes at the age of 18 when she needed attire for a Renaissance faire. What began as a practical project grew into a lifelong passion. Her historically informed pieces span eras from ancient Greece through the late Victorian period. Locally, she designed and fabricated the costumes for the Red Octopus Theatre Company’s recent production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Thursday’s program runs from 2 to 3:30 pm in the second-floor classroom at the Newport Visual Arts Center, located at 777 NW Beach Drive. For more information, go to coastarts.org.
