Rockaway Beach reaches for the sky

Kites of every shape, size and color will fill the skies above Rockaway Beach this weekend as the Rockaway Beach Kite Festival celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Returning to the Rockaway Beach Wayside June this Friday, June 19, through Sunday, June 21, the festival has become one of the Oregon Coast's signature summer traditions, drawing professional and amateur kite fliers from across the Northwest.

Supported by the American Kitefliers Association, the event transforms the beach into a giant outdoor gallery of flight, featuring enormous show kites, precision-flying demonstrations and aerial displays designed to delight visitors of all ages. As the world's largest organized kite-flying association, the group promotes the art and joy of kite flying through festivals, competitions and educational programs throughout the country.

Young visitors can get involved through kite-building and flying activities created especially for kids, while experienced fliers are encouraged to bring their own kites and take advantage of Rockaway Beach's dependable coastal winds.

The festival also features live music, artisan vendors, food booths and kite exhibitions throughout the weekend, creating a family-friendly atmosphere both on the sand and along the shoreline.

Whether you're an avid kite enthusiast or simply looking for a colorful day at the beach, the Rockaway Beach Kite Festival offers a weekend of flight, creativity and coastal fun.

The fun takes flight daily at noon at the Ocean's Edge Wayside, located at 103 S 1st Street.
