‘Lungs’ promises breathtaking theater

Theatre West continues the revitalization of its Readers Theatre series with Duncan Macmillan’s two-person play “Lungs,” running this Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, in Lincoln City.

Readers Theatre removes sets, costumes and staging, focusing entirely on the actors’ voices and the audience’s imagination. The result resembles a live radio play, where the storytelling unfolds through dialogue and performance rather than visual effects.

Directed by Bonnie Ross, the production features Scott Ganyo and Amanda Megyesi-McCave. Ganyo previously appeared at Theatre West in “Marjorie Prime,” “Popcorn Falls” and “Misery,” while Megyesi-McCave performed in “Outside Mullingar” and directed “Almost, Maine” and “Misery.”

Written by British playwright Duncan Macmillan, “Lungs” follows a couple as they navigate the arc of their relationship, moving swiftly between past, present and future as they confront questions of love, family and responsibility in a rapidly changing world. The fast-moving dialogue blends humor with serious themes, touching on issues including environmental change, cultural upheaval and personal choices.

Publisher Concord Theatricals describes the play as “a smart and funny drama that follows a couple through the surprising lifecycle of their relationship, as they grapple with questions of family and change, hope, betrayal, happenstance and the terrible pain that you can only cause the people you love.”

This special free show opens at 7:30 pm on Friday, March 27, with additional performances at 2 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday, March 28. Theatre West is located at 3536 SE Hwy. 101. For more information, go to theatrewest.com or call 541-994-5663.
