A tryst, on screen
Richard Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death, “Tristan und Isolde,” will screen at the Newport Performing Arts Center this Saturday, March 28.
The Ultra-HD screening brings one of opera’s most profound works to the Alice Silverman Theatre, captured live from the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York.
This performance marks a significant milestone in the opera world as soprano Lise Davidsen makes her long-awaited role debut as the Irish princess Isolde. Widely regarded as one of today’s greatest voices, Davidsen leads a distinguished cast that includes mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as Brangäne, bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny, who portrays Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer” and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green in his role debut as King Marke.
This new staging is directed by Yuval Sharon, described by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct at the Wagner festival in Bayreuth. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the production in his first time conducting “Tristan und Isolde” at the Met.
Sung in German with English subtitles, the opera runs approximately five hours and 10 minutes with two intermissions.
Saturday’s screening begins at 10 am at the Newport Performing Arts Center, located at 777 W Olive Street. Tickets range from $12 to $28. For more information, go to coastarts.com or call 541-265-2787.
