The Yachats Celtic Music Festival is back with another world-class roster of concerts and workshops at five locations throughout town from Friday, Nov. 7, through Sunday, Nov. 9.
Everything wonderful is back and better, including the Piper on the Point at sunset, whisky tasting, food and drinks, vendors, jam sessions at the Drift Inn, dancing, workshops and free concerts.
Ticketed concerts will be held at the Yachats Community Presbyterian Church and the Yachats Commons.
The music kicks off on Friday, Nov. 7, with Grammy award-winning and BBC award-nominated vocalist and songwriter Susan McKeown. Born in Dublin, McKeown is widely acknowledged as one of the most powerful and innovative voices in folk music today. In a distinguished career, she has performed at Glastonbury, The Edinburgh Festival, Carnegie Hall and the Walt Disney Concert Hall and had her music featured on PBS, NPR and the BBC. She will perform with her trio featuring Kyle Sanna and Matt Mancuso.
Friday will also feature performances from returning musicians Lisa Lynne and Aryeh Frankfurter. Masterfully combining Celtic harps, Swedish nyckelharpa, Ukrainian bandura, bouzouki, cittern and more, they will take you on a journey through the history of Celtic music with their unique show and wondrous stories and humor.
Saturday, Nov. 8, will begin with the dynamic transatlantic trio One for the Foxes, an exciting band that presents a rousing blend of Irish and American folk music. The group is made up of Dublin’s Tadhg Ó Meachair, Galway’s Dave Curley and Denver, Colorado’s Joanna Hyde.
Through a shared deep-rooted passion for Irish traditional music, this trio highlights the vital role of Irish traditional music as part of the foundation of American folk music.
Saturday will continue with the performers and teachers that make up the Dréos trio, who have been at the forefront of the Pacific Northwest Celtic music scene for decades. Combining the blazing piping of Eliot Grasso, virtuosic fiddling of Brandon Vance and powerhouse accompaniment of Glen Waddell, Dréos offers listeners exciting, handcrafted music in a living tradition and brings audiences and students into a centuries-old cultural-artistic dialogue.
Saturday’s offerings will conclude with a performance by Québécois trad band É.T.É. With influences from jazz, progressive rock and classical music, violinist Élisabeth Moquin, bouzouki player Thierry Clouette and cellist Élisabeth Giroux create their own trad universe with original compositions and unique arrangements of Québécois and Acadian repertoire. Their rich vocal harmonies, groove, ease at their instruments and their electrifying simpatico onstage create an unforgettable show.
Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8 and 9, will also feature dance and music workshops, including Rob Gandar’s popular slide whistle workshop and Irish Sean-nos and set dancing workshops with Maldon Meehan,
The free concerts will be held at the Yachats Commons, the Yachats Lions Club and, weather permitting, on the beach at the Yachats State Park.
