Bug out to Newport
Luckily, many insects don’t take being called bugs and pests personally and do important work in our gardens. Learn more about how to forge a positive relationship with your tiny garden friends at the Lincoln County Master Gardener Association program “Creepy Crawlers: Friend or Foe?” at Newport Public Library this Saturday, April 4.
The session will feature Certified OSU Extension Master Gardener Janice Smith leading an interactive look at insects and other invertebrates commonly found in coastal gardens.
The program will help guests distinguish between pests and beneficial species while offering strategies for managing them through a holistic approach. The focus will be on understanding insect biology and behavior to minimize damage while reducing impacts on people, the environment and non-target organisms.
Smith, a native Oregonian and longtime vegetable gardener, has been a Master Gardener since 2017. She brings years of experience working with both pests and beneficial insects and has a particular interest in identifying arthropods and understanding their habits.
Saturday’s program runs from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at Newport Public Library, located at 35 NW Nye Street. Registration is recommended. For more information or to register, go to newportlibrary.org or call 541-265-2153.
