The place to bee

Seashore’s Joy Garden will buzz with activity on Saturday, June 27, when Waldport Public Library hosts its fourth annual Pollinator Day celebration.

The free community event offers a day of hands-on learning, presentations and activities focused on the insects, birds and other creatures that play a vital role in pollination. Guests of all ages can meet experts in beekeeping, gardening, conservation and wildlife research while learning about efforts to protect pollinators and their habitats.

Among the highlights will be a live observation hive, giving visitors a close-up look at honeybees in action. Presenters will cover topics including the Oregon Bee Atlas, honey production and tasting, local wildlife research, climate and environmental concerns and efforts to protect the threatened Oregon silverspot butterfly. The Oregon STEM Hub will also bring its popular Bee Bots for kids and families to explore.

Volunteers will offer tours of the Seashore Joy Garden, including the Waldport Library Family Learning Garden, the Memorial Garden and the Food Giveaway garden. Founded in 2015, the community space continues its mission of education, food sharing and environmental stewardship.

Numerous community organizations will participate throughout the day, providing information and activities focused on literacy, gardening, conservation and community service.

Saturday's event runs from 10 am to 2 pm at Seashore Joy Garden, located just off NW Hemlock Street in Waldport. For more information, go to  waldportoregon.gov.
