Symposium on the horizon
Cape Perpetua is not just a particularly scenic section of the Central Coast, it also has protections in place to help it stay that way.
Reserve your spot now to hear from leading experts on “The Connections of Cape Perpetua” at the Cape Perpetua Collaborative's 12th Annual Land-Sea Symposium, taking place in the Yachats Commons on Friday, Jan. 31.
The engaging presentations will cover a range of topics including fisheries, social science, the night sky, tide pools and birds related to the unique biodiversity of the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve and adjacent Siuslaw National Forest.
Keynote speakers include Dr. Rick Colwell, professor emeritus at Oregon State University; Dr. Sarah Klain, human dimensions lead at the ODFW Marine Reserves Program; Jim King, director of Central Coast Food Web; Jamie Kish, associate and tidepool ambassador lead at the Cape Perpetua Collaborative Program; and Roy Lowe, wildlife photographer and retired manager of National Wildlife Refuges.
Located between Florence and Yachats, the Cape Perpetua area is a biodiverse recreation destination, home to lush coastal rainforests and deep cultural history. It also includes Oregon’s largest marine reserve, where the take of wildlife and human development is restricted.
Because of its dynamic environment, the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve is home to a wide range of wildlife such as whales, sea lions, seals, pelicans, cormorants, rockfish and intertidal invertebrates that fuel a complex food web between the land and sea.
The area also contains two Marine Protected Areas and a seabird protection area. Unlike the reserve, these protected places allow limited take in their boundaries.
The Cape Perpetua Collaborative is an organization giving voice to this special place through speaker presentations, ambassador programs and citizen science projects.
The Jan. 31 symposium will begin at 5 pm at the Yachats Commons, located at 441 Hwy. 101. Food and drinks are provided and a raffle featuring coastal gifts will take place at intermission.
