Pedal of honor

Salute the end of summer with Waldport’s Beach, Bike & Blues

You can choose to bike to this blues festival or, if you drove, hop aboard a trolley or pedicab and leave the last leg of the journey to someone else.

Waldport’s fifth annual Beach, Bike & Blues Festival returns this Saturday, Sept. 12, moving to a new home at Treasure Bay Resort for a day of family-friendly fun overlooking Alsea Bay.

The festival brings together four blues acts alongside food and beverages, vendors, activities and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the waterfront setting.

This year, designated festival parking will be available at Louis Southworth Park, with the Yachats Trolley shuttling guests between the parking area and Treasure Bay Resort.

For those who would rather pedal, the Green Bike Co-Op will once again be part of the festivities, offering free pedicab rides. The organization has also provided a bicycle that will be raffled off during the festival.

Music is at the heart of the day, with a lineup ranging from New Orleans sounds and old-time blues to some serious Northwest blues credentials.

Whole Lotta Louis featuring Ronnie Jay Pirrello will get things rolling, followed by Old Time Blues with Paul Schuytema and Skip Jones & The Spirit of New Orleans.

Closing out the music will be the Sonny Hess, Lisa Mann & Kelly Pierce Trio. The three musicians bring plenty of experience to the stage, including multiple Muddy Awards from the Cascade Blues Association.

Beyond the music, guests can browse a vendor fair and try their hand at the 18-hole Bonsai Putting Course.

Food and beverages options include fish tacos and smoked fish from Sea Bre’s Seafood, sweets and soup from Chubby Lil’ Mermaid, savory pies from The Captain’s Crust Wood-Fired Pizza and drinks from Little Heifer Coffee Cart. Oregon microbrews and select wine will also be for sale.

The festival is designed as an all-ages affair and includes a kids’ play area. Four-legged blues fans are welcome, too, so dogs can come along for the festivities.

Saturday’s festival runs from 11 am to 6 pm at Treasure Bay Resort, located at 320 NW Spring Street in Waldport. Admission is $10 for adults and free for kids aged 18 and under.
