No boos for these actors
Thanks to the ample parking lot at the Newport Performing Arts Center, you won’t have to take many steps to get to the screening of “The Fifth Step,” a tense and darkly funny stage drama from National Theatre Live. The play, filmed in London’s West End, will hit the big screen on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
The critically acclaimed piece by David Ireland features a powerhouse duo: Emmy and BAFTA-winner Martin Freeman, known for “The Hobbit,” “The Responder” and “Sherlock” and Olivier Award-winner Jack Lowden, known for “Slow Horses” and “Dunkirk.”
The story centers on James, played by Freeman, a seasoned veteran of Alcoholics Anonymous, who agrees to sponsor a volatile newcomer named Luka, played by Lowden. As the two men bond over black coffee and shared histories of struggle, they build a fragile friendship. However, as Luka approaches “Step Five” — the crucial moment of confession — dangerous truths emerge that threaten to shatter the trust upon which both of their recoveries depend.
Known for his refreshingly blunt and fearless humor, Ireland delivers an intense, unflinching look at faith, masculinity and the complexities of the human spirit.
Critics have hailed the production, directed by Finn den Hertog, praising the electric chemistry between Freeman and Lowden.
Wednesday’s screening begins at 7 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, located at 777 W Olive Street. Tickets range from $16 to $22. For more information, go to coastarts.com or call 541-265-2787.
