Newport presents a fan favorite
Romance, deception and Mozart’s sublime music come together when the Metropolitan Opera’s “Così fan tutte” arrives on the big screen at the Newport Performing Arts Center this Saturday, Oct. 10.
Mozart’s comic opera puts the faithfulness of two young couples to the test through an elaborate scheme involving disguises, flirtation and plenty of romantic confusion.
Director Phelim McDermott transports the action to 1950s Coney Island, surrounding the lovers with the colorful spectacle of a boardwalk amusement park.
The cast features soprano Federica Lombardi and mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey as sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, with tenor Duke Kim and baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky as their suitors Ferrando and Guglielmo. Bass-baritone Gerald Finley portrays the cynical Don Alfonso, whose wager sets the romantic experiment in motion, while soprano Ana María Martínez appears as the clever maid Despina.
Recorded live on the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York, the production will be shown in Ultra High Definition in the Alice Silverman Theatre.
Saturday’s screening begins at 10 am at the Newport Performing Arts Center, located at 777 W Olive Street. Tickets range from $14 to $30. For more information or tickets, go to coastarts.org or call 541-265-2787.
