Settle in for an intimate evening of acoustic music when internationally acclaimed guitarist and composer Hiroya Tsukamoto visits the Newport Performing Arts Center this Friday, Aug. 14.
Born in Kyoto, Japan, Tsukamoto has earned an international following for his expressive fingerstyle guitar playing, blending elements of folk, jazz and world music into richly textured original compositions. His performances have been praised for their warmth and emotional depth, with the Boston Herald describing them as an "impressionistic journey" and Jazz Review applauding his "chops, passion and warmth."
Tsukamoto began playing the five-string banjo at the age of 13 before discovering the guitar and developing the distinctive style that has taken him to audiences around the world. He has released five solo albums and performed at venues including New York's Blue Note, the United Nations and Japan's national broadcaster, NHK.
