Get in with ‘The Outsiders’ in Newport
Even if the name Ponyboy Curtis doesn’t make you nostalgic for the first time you read “The Outsiders” or saw the movie adaptation, you can still enjoy New Visions Arts’ stage production of S.E. Hinton's classic coming-of-age novel, opening in Newport this Friday, Aug. 21.
Set in 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma, the story follows Ponyboy as he struggles to find his place in a world divided by class, loyalty and circumstance. As tensions rise between the working-class Greasers and the wealthier Socs, Ponyboy and his friends discover the true meaning of family, resilience and hope in the face of hardship.
The production explores themes of identity, belonging and perseverance that have made "The Outsiders" a favorite with generations of readers and audiences.
Due to intense thematic elements and simulated violence, this production is recommended for audiences aged 12 and older.
Performances are at 7:30 pm Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 29, with 2:30 pm matinées on Sundays, Aug. 23 and 30, at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street. A pay-what-you-can performance will be offered at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Aug. 27.
