Expect a full house for Strauss

Elegant duds are optional for attendance at the next Metropolitan Opera’s presentation of Richard Strauss’s romantic opera “Arabella” — streamed directly from the Met stage in New York to the big screen at Newport Performing Arts Center this Saturday, Nov. 22.

The story centers on the beautiful and witty Arabella, a young noblewoman determined to find a true love who respects her independence, despite the pressures of her financially strained family.

The performance will feature soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen as the title heroine. She is joined by radiant soprano Louise Alder in her Met debut as Arabella’s sister, Zdenka and bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny as Mandryka, the dashing count who seeks Arabella’s hand.

The sumptuous staging by legendary director Otto Schenk captures the enchantment and emotional depth of Strauss’ final collaboration with librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal.

The opera, sung in German with English subtitles, runs approximately four hours with two intermissions.

Saturday’s show starts at 10 am at the Newport Performing Arts Center, located at 777 W Olive Street. Tickets range from $12 to $28. For more information, go to coastarts.com or call 541-265-2787.
