Duo you like guitar music?
You’ll have two chances to see the duo of Ben Graves and Nat Hulskamp, Brazilian guitar players who will perform at Zurita in Nye Beach this Saturday, July 26 and as guests of INHOUSE Jazz in Lincoln City on Sunday, July 27.
The guitarists met and began playing together in 2006. They perform sambas, choros and bossa novas from legendary Brazilian composers and in a variety of styles from their experiences in jazz, Middle Eastern, Spanish and South American music. Together, their performances are full of beautiful melodies, rhythms and guitar interplay.
Graves studied, shared the stage and toured with national and internationally known artists including Rick Zunigar, Tony Dumas, Leon Russell, Dick Berk and Charles McPherson. He has performed in music festivals all over the United States and with regional jazz greats. He has a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies from Portland State University. He currently resides in Portland, where he leads his own jazz quartet and performs regularly with Bossa PDX, Gordon Lee Quintet, Annette Lowman and The Brazilian Guitar Duo.
Hulskamp was born in Portland. He began studying guitar with guitarist/composer Paul Chasman at age 17 and was soon introduced to flamenco guitar by Jose Solano. His interest in the influence of Arabic music on flamenco led him to study oud in Morocco. After returning to the United States, he moved to Seattle to study ethnomusicology at the University of Washington. In 2004 he returned to Portland and in 2010, formed the trio Caminhos Cruzados with jazz guitarist Dan Balmer and Ghanaian percussion virtuoso Israel Annoh. In 2012, Hulskamp received a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council to travel to Spain to record a collaboration with several renowned flamenco artists.
