Duck out for a stroll

Birders of all experience levels will have a chance to start the new year outdoors as Seven Capes Bird Alliance leads two guided bird walks in early January, highlighting winter birds and accessible local habitats.

The first walk will take place at Regatta Park and Devils Lake this Friday, Jan. 9. The outing will begin with a walk along forested trails in search of songbirds, followed by lake viewing for wintering waterfowl. Regatta Park is known for its family-friendly amenities, but its quieter nature trails offer excellent birding opportunities during the winter months.

Participants will meet at 9 am in the parking lot off NE 14th Street.

A second bird walk will happen at the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center Nature Trail and Yaquina Bay South Jetty this Saturday, Jan. 10. Yaquina Bay regularly hosts thousands of wintering waterfowl, and participants can expect to look for harlequin ducks, loons and other diving ducks. After walking the nature trail, the group will drive to the south jetty as time permits. This outing will feature short, easy walks to viewing areas and is suitable for birders of all abilities.

Participants will meet at 9 am in the visitor center parking lot at Hatfield Marine Science Center.

All Seven Capes Bird Alliance walks are free, family-friendly, easy to moderately easy and no pre-registration or experience is required. Binoculars and guidebooks are provided. Walks are held rain or shine; dress appropriately for coastal weather and muddy trails. For more information, go to sevencapes.org.
