Double your funk in Lincoln City

The Lincoln City Cultural Center will host a night of funk, soul and horn-driven groove when DTW and Soul Proprietors perform this Friday, March 20.

Headlining act DTW is an American horn band that blends jazz, funk, rhythm and blues and swing into a bold, energetic sound. Founded in 2013 as a five-piece ensemble, the group originally featured a rhythm section with a single horn player. The band expanded its sound the following year at the inaugural Funk in the Forest festival in Corvallis, growing into an eight-piece lineup with four horns and four rhythm players.

Since then, DTW has continued to expand both its lineup and musical ambitions. Between 2015 and 2019 the group staged large productions featuring as many as 18 performers, including expanded rhythm sections, multiple vocalists and up to seven horn players. Today, the band typically performs with nine or 10 instrumentalists, often joined by guest vocalists and an emcee.

In 2017 the band launched the DTW Street Band, a mobile ensemble inspired by New Orleans brass band traditions that performs traditional and contemporary jazz at parades and festivals. DTW has also developed themed productions such as “The Music of Video Games,” a big-band reinterpretation of video game soundtracks, along with holiday and Halloween funk shows.

Opening the evening will be Soul Proprietors, an Oregon Coast-based, eight-piece funk and soul band formed in early 2025. While the group is new, its members bring decades of combined experience from backgrounds in symphonic performance, jazz, theater and music education.

The band features former San Diego Symphony bassist Greg Berton, guitarist Bill Hartsell, percussion professor Dr. Sandy Schaefer on drums and lead trumpeter Greg Hilfiker. The horn section also includes trumpeter John Bringetto and saxophonist Jason Nelson, while arranger and music director Matt White performs on keyboards and saxophone. Vocalist Amy White leads the group with a soulful sound rooted in jazz.

Together the Soul Proprietors combine tight horn lines, strong vocals and an energetic rhythm section to create a lively dance-floor experience.

Friday’s concert begins at 7 pm at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, located at 540 NE Hwy. 101. Tickets are $30 in advance, or $35 at the door if available. For more information or tickets, go to lincolncity-culturalcenter.org or call 541-994-9994.
