Head to the charming coastal town of Wheeler this Saturday, July 12, to help celebrate a major milestone for outdoor enthusiasts: the launch of the first coastal segment of the Salmonberry Trail.

The family-friendly events planned include: live music, guided hikes, a “Tales of the Trail” history talk, rides on Historic Scenic Railroad trains, a festive parade, activities for kids and local vendors offering goods and services.

The 82-mile rails-to-trails project, first imagined in 2012, follows the route of the historic Tillamook Railroad. It will ultimately head west from Banks to Wheeler, then south along the coast to Tillamook – offering hikers and bikers a safer, more scenic route through some of the most breathtaking landscapes on the Oregon Coast.

This initial half-mile section of the trail showcases trail design and sets the stage for community support and excitement.

The live music concert, featuring Kris Steward, will happen at Waterfront Park just after the conclusion of the Salmonberry Trail event.

The craft making session, “Salmon Hats and Hiking Sticks” followed by the parade to show off the creations, will be held at the Heart of CARTM, located at 395 Nehalem Blvd.

The Salmonberry Trail event runs from 1 to 5 pm at Wheeler Waterfront Park, located at 500 Marine Drive. For more information, go to salmonberrytrail.org.
