Art galore in Manzanita
See new work by regional artists during the February Gallery Exhibition at Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Art, opening this Saturday, Feb. 7.
The show features paintings by Alison Dougherty, sculptural clay works by Brenda Fugle and cyanotype photography by Claudia Hollister.
An opening reception will be held from 3 to 5 pm on Saturday.
Dougherty’s “Coastal Poetry” explores layered abstraction and bold mark-making drawn from personal experience. Her impressions of the world are abstractly layered in large forced brush-strokes and impactful sgraffito style scribbling with intentionally placed marks of color, thrown thick pigment and softly blended atmospheric backgrounds.
Fugle’s “Emerging Rock Portraits: A Healing Journey” is a sculptural clay collection that unfolded when she was broken and disoriented from a string of tremendous losses and would walk the local beaches and trails collecting rocks. The works are clay-covered stones fired using raku and traditional techniques, reflecting themes of loss and renewal.
Hollister’s “Into the Blues” highlights cyanotype processes that combine sunlight, botanicals and photographic imagery to capture fleeting moments of light and time. Since the 2020 lockdown, her garden has become her sanctuary and source of inspiration.
The exhibit will be on display through Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Hoffman Center for the Arts, 594 Laneda Avenue. The center is open from noon to 5 pm Thursday through Sunday, except the last Sunday of every month. For more information, go to hoffmanarts.org.
