Anyone else in the mood for a political satire?

Theatre West in Lincoln City will launch its 2026 season with Paul Slade Smith's sharp-witted political comedy "The Outsider," opening on Thursday, July 30.

Directed by Andrew Schmitz in his directorial debut, the award-winning play takes aim at the world of modern American politics, where image often matters more than substance and honesty can become an unexpected liability.

The story follows Ned Newley, a brilliant but painfully shy policy expert who unexpectedly finds himself elevated to the governor's office following a political scandal. Uncomfortable with public speaking and even less comfortable with campaigning, Ned becomes the focus of frantic efforts by political consultants determined to turn his awkward sincerity into an electable public image. As spin doctors, strategists and staffers scramble to manage the situation, the play explores what happens when genuine integrity collides with the spectacle of modern politics.

Winner of two Helen Hayes Awards in 2023, "The Outsider" has earned praise for its timely humor, memorable characters and surprisingly optimistic view of public service. While the play pokes fun at political theater, it also asks whether honesty and decency can still succeed in a world driven by optics and public perception.

The cast features Russel Sweet as Ned Newley, Jan Coloccia as Louise, Chris Vono as A.C., Teresa Mahaffy-Johnson as Rachel Parsons, Michael Murphy as Arthur and Wil Keepers and Mike Vono sharing the role of Dave.

Performances are at 7:30 pm on Thursdays through Saturdays, July 30 through Aug. 22, with Sunday matinees at 2 pm on Aug. 2, 9, 16 and 23.
