A prescription for fighting hunger
Two members of the popular Portland-based classical Trio Musicorum Medicorum will perform at Atonement Lutheran Church in Newport this Sunday, Oct. 12.
The free community concert is a benefit the Newport Food Pantry, with guests encouraged to bring nonperishable food items or donations.
The program will include Ravel’s “Piece En Forme de Habanera,” JS Bach’s “Sonata #3 in G minor,” Fauré’s “Sonata #1, Op 108 in D minor,” Chausson’s “Piece Op 39” and Brahms’ “Sonata #2 in F major Op 99.”
The nationally renowned classical trio includes cellist Rebecca Reese, pianist Andrew Bonner and Newport Symphony first violinist Alistair Kok. Reese and Bonner will be the performers for Sunday's concert.
The group has appeared for several concerts in Newport during the past eight years, most recently in August 2024. The group calls itself “Trio Musicorum Medicorum” because each member has a day job in the medical field in the Portland area. Kok is a dentist, Bonner is a naturopath and Reese is a physician. Kok will re-join the duo for a spring performance in Newport.
Bonner has degrees in music from Harvard and Brandeis universities. He was a freelance musician in Boston for 20 years, has directed choirs and was the organist for the Emmanuel Music complete Bach Cantata series for five years. Though currently working as a naturopath, he continues to perform and compose music as much as his busy schedule allows.
Reese studied cello at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Denver. She taught at the University of Alaska and then moved on to Los Angeles, where she worked as a freelance musician for many years. She has performed in many classical orchestras and chamber music groups as well as playing studio-recorded background music for TV and movies. She earned a medical degree from Tufts University in Boston and currently practices cranial osteopathy and homeopathy in Portland with Bonner, her husband.
Sunday's entertainment will begin at 10 am with music for worship, followed at 2 pm by the community concert. Atonement Lutheran Church is located at 2315 Hwy. 101. For more information, go to tm2pdx.com.
