Bring one, two or 3.14 friends to Pie Day
The upper crust of Nehalem – the “pie society,” as it were — will join the lower crust and the filling this Saturday, Jan. 28, to raise money for two worthy causes: the Lower Nehalem Community Trust and Food Roots. The occasion? The annual Pie Day Auction and Feast.
Doors at the Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church, 36050 10th St. in Nehalem, will open at 6:30 p.m. For a $5 suggested donation at the door, you can enjoy a celebrity-hosted pie auction and an all-you-can-eat pie feast. This family-friendly event is an annual fundraiser for the two organizations, designed to bring the community together for the fun of pie buying, pie eating and honoring pie as a slice of the American Dream.
The auction will feature both sweet and savory pies made by some of the best pie bakers in the lower Nehalem Watershed/Neahkahnie Mountain region (and a few coming from Clatsop County this year). These delicious desserts will be auctioned off by local radio personality Peter Newman and screen and stage actor Megan (Liz) Cole adding her own personal spice to the event.
Those successful in procuring pies from the auction can safely tuck them away and partake in the final slice of fun, the pie feast. Food Roots will be providing pies of all kinds for Pie Day revelers to enjoy.
Proceeds from this event will further the work of the two hosting non-profits: the Lower Nehalem Community Trust (nehalemtrust.org), a local land conservation organization, and Food Roots (foodrootsnw.org), a community food organization supporting local food and farm awareness, production and access on the north coast.
The event is made possible, in part, by Unfurl of Manzanita, Komm Construction of Nehalem and TLC Credit Union. For more information about the Pie Day/Night event call 503-368-3203 or 503-812-2800.

Butter, and crab lovers, drawn to Yachats
The crab season was a little late this year, but the Yachats Lions’ Crab Feed is right on time. It will take place, as it does every year, on the last Saturday of January. It’s become so popular, though, that the Lions are hosting the feed in two locations.
This Saturday, Jan. 28, you can choose from two seatings: 12:30 p.m. at the Yachats Commons, and 4 p.m. at both the Yachats Commons and the Yachats Lions Hall. Both buildings are found on W. Fourth St., just off Hwy. 101.
Your $25 ticket buys you all the steamed Dungeness crab you can eat, plus French bread, cole slaw, baked beans and soda or coffee. They’ll be serving until the crab is gone.
You can purchase tickets in advance at Judith’s Kitchen Tools and The Lions Thrift Store in Yachats, and at Dock of the Bay in Waldport. Or, contact Larry Weibe at 541-547-3546.

Florence takes a Crack at crab dinners
You may even hear the crack of the crab, from as far away as Florence. You’re invited to the first-ever Florence Crab Crack, set for 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Florence Events Center. It’s a fundraiser for Florence Food share.
Guests will enjoy delicious fresh Oregon Dungeness crab, side dishes, dessert and beverages with a no-host bar available. The “Crab Head” and Crab Crack Committee Chair, Bob MacDuffee, will be the master of ceremonies.
Tickets are $25 per person and are available for purchase now through Jan. 25, with no ticket sales at the door the day of the event.
Entrance will include a Dungeness crab dinner with all the trimmings, and the chance to bid on a number of silent auction items. The winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m.
“Thanks to the support of many sponsors, all proceeds from this event will benefit Florence Food Share, the local food pantry that provides food security to those facing hunger in the Florence/Mapleton area.
Food Share currently serves 650 households made up of approximately 1,875 individuals. Each ticket sold will benefit the hunger relief efforts of Florence Food Share,” said a release from the organizers.
“We hope you’re able to join us for this unique event and come prepared to enjoy great company, tasty crustaceans, fine beverages, delectable food & dessert.”
