Trashion models wear green, in any color

[Posted April 30, 2008]

At this fund-raiser, it’s OK to call a woman trashy. Just don’t call her dumpy, because the annual Trash Bash is about keeping things out of the dump. The recycle runway at this event, set for May 16, will be filled with enterprising models who made their outfits out of stuff other people threw away.
Cart’m, the nonprofit that operates the refuse and recycling center for Nehalem and Manzanita, started this art-themed potluck in 1998. In the decade since, it’s become a big festival and fund-raiser that attracts more than 1,000 enthusiastic community recyclers.
“The Trashion Show made last year the best,” said Jude Lally of the 2007 Trash Bash. “It’s an amazing home-spun community event. Creative genius, reminiscent of the Oregon Country Fair.”
The 2006 Bash was Glenna Gray’s favorite. “I loved the MarchFourth Marching Band.  It was a spectacular surprise.”
The tenth anniversary Trash Bash is set for 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 16, and will feature a fabulous raffle prize, a Trashion Show, a full gallery of local trash art, a band that organizers promise will make you want to shimmy-shake, face painting, costumes galore, and more.
“It’s so fun being there with the whole community, said Craig Mackie. “It’s just pure community, like no other event in the area.”
Children and adults parade through the crowd and dance the night away in costumes they’ve made themselves, from waste materials. Cart’m has issued the call for entries, with ready-to-display art pieces (both floor and wall installations) accepted on May 13. To take part in the Trashion Show, call Julie Yanko, pictured above and on the cover sporting a beach rope dress, at 503-791-6092.
They’re also looking for volunteers to transform the recycling center into an art gallery and happening venue. At work parties held before the Trash Bash (May 10-13), supporters set up the area.
On Saturday, May 17, volunteers clean up after the fund-raiser and turn the site back into a functioning facility. To sign up for either shift, contact Jessi Just at 503-368-7764 or justrecyles@yahoo.com, for information about the “volunteer roundup” on May 9.  The Trash Bash will take place at Cart’m, between Nehalem and Manzanita, on Necarney City Road.
