Tall Ships to sail into Newport
[Updated May 6, 2008]

The brig Lady Washington, featured in the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," and her companion ship, the Hawaiian Chieftain, will fire cannons in salute to the people of Newport when they arrive Saturday, May 10, for a three-day visit. The ships are scheduled to arrive at Port  Dock No. 2, 600 SE Bay Boulevard in Newport at around noon.
The new Lady Washington is a full-scale reproduction of the original Lady Washington. Built in the British Colony of Massachusetts in the 1750's, the original vessel carried freight between colonial ports until the American Revolutionary War, when she became an American privateer. In 1787, after the war, she was given a major refit to prepare her for a unprecedented trading voyage around Cape Horn. In 1788, she became the first American vessel to make landfall on the west coast of North America.
The modern Lady Washington was thoroughly researched by historians and constructed by skilled shipwrights. She was launched as part of the 1989 Washington State Centennial celebration.
The topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of a typical European merchant trader of the turn of the 19th century. Her hull shape and rigging are similar to those of Spanish explorer's ships used in the expeditions of the late 18th century along the Washington, Oregon, and California coasts. Built of steel in Hawaii in 1988 and originally designed for cargo trade among the Hawaiian Islands, her design was influenced by the early colonial passenger and coastal packets that carried on coastal trade along the Atlantic coastal cities and towns.
The ships will offer public tours, educational programs for local school children, and public sailings. Dockside  tours, offered Saturday and Monday, will feature crew dressed in period costumes. A $3 donation per person is appreciated.
A family-friendly Adventure Sail, which includes raising a sail, sea shanty singing, and maritime stories,  is scheduled for May 11. Tickets for the Adventure Sails are $55 for adults, $45 for seniors, students, and active military, and $35 for children under 12. A Battle Sail is scheduled for the afternoon of May 11. Tickets are $60 for adults, $50 for seniors, students, and active military, and $40 for children under 12.
Reservations are recommended. Call 800-200-5239 or purchase tickets online at www.historicalseaport.org.
