TAPA prepares world premiere of ‘Prominence’ The Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts is just one week away from its world premiere of an original work by Scott Malin: “Prominence.” Directing this first production is well-known actor and Netarts residence, George Dzundza. Dzundza said he’s been overwhelmed by the hard work and sacrifice that it has taken to mount this production. He describes it as, “an attempt to show us the human condition of a raw, difficult situation with humor and sensitivity. You will have to go a long way to avoid being touched by this charismatic cast and their sensitive performances.” “I can guarantee you haven’t seen anything like it performed in this area and to top it off, it’s a world premiere. You will be the first audience to see it performed anywhere,” Dzundza said. The cast includes Tillamook County residents Mark Johnson, Terri Winkle, Shadd Cunningham, Julie Gunderson, TJ Newton and Sandra Coops. “Prominence” plays at 7 p.m. June 20, 21, 27 and 28, and July 5, and at 2 p.m. June 29 and July 6, at The Barn Community Playhouse, 12th St. and Ivy in Tillamook. Tickets, $12 general and $9 seniors and students, are sold in advance at Diamond Art Jewelers, 503-842-7940.
Cast, away! (Until ‘Robinson Crusoe’ tryouts on June 23) “When do we get to try out?” is a question the staff of Lincoln City Cultural Center is hearing frequently these days. The answer? June 23, the day that Missoula Children’s Theatre opens up auditions and rehearsals for this year’s production, “Robinson Crusoe.” This traveling company will provide a number of youngsters, grades one through 12, an opportunity to appear on stage this summer at the LCCC. They come with scripts, costumes, sets and music – all they need are actors. Auditions for the play “Robinson Crusoe” will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, June 23, in the auditorium of the LCCC, 540 NE Hwy. 101. No pre-registration is required. Rehearsals will continue every day of the following week, with performances set for 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 28. “We’re grateful to sponsors who have helped to make this total experience absolutely free for all children,” said Chris Cairns, 2008 Missoula chairperson. “Additional donations have made it possible to lower adult ticket prices to just $5 for each performance. What a supportive community we have!” For details, call 541-994-9994.
Bueños Irish? Argentinian tango at Nana’s Irish Pub It will be almost like the United Nations in Nye Beach on June 26, when Argentine tango dancers will be dancing in the back of Nana’s Irish Kitchen and Pub. Argentine Tango is a different kind of dance, organizers say, because it is entirely spontaneous and can be simple or complex with unusually fun music. The music will be a combination of Golden Age Classics and Nuevo, with Robert vanCreveld serving as DJ. The fun will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 26. Nana’s Kitchen sells Irish beers as well as lunch and dinner at 613 NW 3rd St in the heart of Nye Beach, Newport. Newport has a friendly tango community that meets Monday evenings at the South Beach Community Center. For details, head to newportoregontango.com
West African Day Camp Bay City Arts Center is now taking reservations for its second annual West African Day Camp for children and adults, set for the week of July 14-19. The courses will be led by Habiba, a native of Ghana, West Africa. Habiba, who has been performing and teaching West African Dance in Portland schools for 14 years, is a charismatic dancer, storyteller and teacher. She is the recipient of the Lilla Jewel award for artistic excellence. Children’s dance classes with Habiba will begin at 10 a.m., Monday through Friday. From 11 a.m. to noon, the children will join artist Betsy Lattig for projects including Ashanti flags, bead making, tribal masks, cloth weaving and printing and other African arts. Following a provided lunch and playtime at the nearby park, children will join Betsy, Dia and Helen for work on a theatre project depicting a traditional African story. Camp will end each day at 3 p.m. Cost for camp is $50 for the week, and scholarships are available. Children of all ages will be accepted, but parents and grandparents must stay to supervise any child under the ages of 5. Other parents of attending children are welcome and encouraged to stay, at no cost, and help with activities and lunch preparation. The adult dance class with Habiba will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost for this class is $25 for the week. On Friday, July 18, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., the BCAC will offer an adult drumming class with master drummer O.B. Addy. Reservations are required. Day camp students, both children and adults, will be joining Habiba, O.B. and other imported drummers for the culminating performance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. The BCAC will be offering a Ghana Cafe beginning at 5 p.m. that evening, featuring peanut soup, spinach stew, plantain, fried fish and melons. The cost for dinner and performance is $15. All events will be held at the Bay City Arts Center, 5680 A Street. For more information or reservations, call 503-377-9620 and leave a message.
