The Willamette Writers Coast Chapter will welcome poet A. Molotkov to Newport this Sunday, May 21, to present a workshop entitled “Purifying the Poem.”
During the workshop, Moloktov will discuss why poetry is, or is not, relevant and important for prose writers. Participants will study contemporary poems to analyze how effective and economical use of language helps the poet’s goals. Poets and prose writers are invited to bring copies of their own short works to share and study how their language or logic can be optimized. There will also be time for writing.
Molotkov, the author “The Catalog of Broken Things,” was born in Russia and moved to the US in 1990. He switched to writing in English in 1993.
In addition to his book, his work has been published in numerous literary magazines. He has won several fiction and poetry contests, along with a 2015 Oregon Literary Fellowship.
Sunday’s workshop, which is free and open to all, will run from 2 to 4 pm at the Newport Public Library, 35 NW Nye Street.
