Newport’s Yaquina Bay Yacht Club will celebrate the 18th annual Summer Sailstice by offering free boat trips to one and all this Saturday, June 23.
Held on the weekend closest to the Summer Solstice each year, the Summer Sailstice invites sailors everywhere to hoist their sails and share their love of boating.
Club members will be on hand from noon to 4 pm to offer free, one-hour sailing trips on Yaquina Bay, weather and space permitting. Passengers can sign up on a first-come-first-served basis, starting at 11 am at the clubhouse, 750 SE Bay Blvd.
Children five years old and above are welcome — with adult supervision and a well-fitting USCG-approved lifejacket.
After sailing is over, the Yacht Club will throw a big dance party featuring Portland’s Lloyd Jones Quartet with some of the swampiest blues boogie around. This 21-and-over party will run from 5 to 10 pm, with food included and beer and wine available to purchase. The party is Hawaiian-themed, with prizes on offer for the best Aloha shirt.
Admission is $12 in advance or $15 at the door, with proceeds benefiting the club’s programs, including education outreach. For more information or to buy tickets, call 541-547-3483.
