Beat gray weather, with heather

Published on October 10, 2018 10:51AM

A world of hardy heathers will unfold before gardeners and plant lovers alike this Wednesday, Oct. 17, when the Seal Rock Garden Club hosts a presentation from Ella May Wulff.

A garden filled with well-chosen heather cultivars can be colorful every month of the year. In fact, such a garden can have heathers in bloom in every season. Landscapers, big-box stores and most garden centers offer a very limited selection of heathers and even less information about how to properly care for them. Wulff, who gardens in Philomath, will talk about the world of hardy heathers and explain what you need to do to keep these shrubs in your garden for decades.

Wulff has been gardening since she was a child, lovingly guided by her wonderful godmother who took her to flower shows every year. Orchids are her lifelong passion. However, she re-discovered heathers, her primary horticultural interest and area of expertise, during a visit to a rock garden nursery.

The Oct. 17 talk will start at 11 am at the Seal Rock Garden Clubhouse, 10377 NW Rand Street, next to the old Seal Rock Fire Department. The program is free and open to all, with snacks provided. For more information, call Emilia Lacy at 541-574-9491.
