It’s a safe bet that the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s monthly water bill is the kind of document that should only be inspected after a stiff drink. And for one month out of the year, the electric bill is probably just as bad, as the aquarium hosts its bedazzling Sea of Lights celebration.
The largest holiday light display on the Central Oregon Coast, the Sea of Lights immerses guests in the glow from more than half a million colorful bulbs, artfully displayed against a backdrop of live music and holiday decorations.
Visitors exploring the aquarium after hours can stroll the grounds and admire the displays as well as visiting with Santa Claus and even see him don SCUBA gear for a dunk into one of the exhibit tanks.
This family-friendly event kicks off with a special celebration on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, from 6 to 9 pm. Admission to the first Friday and Saturday of Sea of Lights is $2 plus two cans of nonperishable food — or $10 per person without donation. Admission is free for Aquarium members, but they are encouraged to bring an item to donate. Guests can also donate pet food or new, unwrapped children’s toys for the Newport Fire Department’s Holiday Toy Drive in place of a food donation.
Sea of Lights will continue to illuminate the aquarium from 5 to 8 pm every Friday and Saturday throughout December. Admission is $10 or free with same-day paid admission.
Customers that spend more than $100 at the Newport branch of Walmart will receive a voucher for one free admission to Sea of Lights. The offer is valid while supplies last and certain dates are subject to blackout. See store for details. Guests using a voucher are encouraged, but not required, to make a food or toy donation.
