An upcoming dance camp from the Newport School of Artistic Movement will offer action-packed, fun-filled classes for students aged 10 to adult starting on Monday, June 18.
Running through Friday, June 29, the Summer Dance Intensive will offer modern dance and composition with Cecily Wechter, ballet and improvisation with Nancy Mittleman and yoga with Tina Watanabe and Gidget Manucci.
Wechter is an international choreographer based in Reykjavik, Iceland, who is herself a graduate of the Newport School of Artistic Movement. After leaving Newport, she went on to study and graduate from the School of Music and Dance at the University of Oregon. She has been a guest teacher for Mittleman’s summer Dance Intensives for the past two years, has choreographed for Pacific Dance Ensemble’s “Dances from the Heart” for the past two years and this year’s classic production of “The Wizard in Oz”.
Mittleman, director of the Newport School of Artistic Movement, originally came from New York, and has more than 40 years of directing, teaching, acting and dance expertise. She has performed on both east and west coasts and studied with such luminaries as Martha Graham, Charles Weidman and Leslie Watanabe. Her teaching credentials also include more than 17 years teaching movement and theater in schools as an artist-in-residence in Oregon and British Columbia.
Mittleman’s students have gone on to study and perform at the San Francisco Ballet, the California Institute for the Arts and The Laban School in London to name but a few.
Rounding out the Dance Intensive with yoga classes are Tina Watanabe and Gidget Manucci, both seasoned teachers who are highly skilled in their field.
