The threat of ocean acidification along with potential solutions are the topic of the Science on Tap presentation set for Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Newport’s Rogue Brewery.
Dr. George Waldbusser of Oregon State University will present “Ocean Acidification, Oysters, and You: Coming to terms with changing ocean chemistry,” exploring the impact of the changing ocean on shellfish, with a focus on bivalves.
The acidification of the world’s oceans and coastal waters is happening faster than at any time in the past million years. Unchecked emissions of carbon dioxide are causing changes to ocean chemistry, with consequences for marine life, including food from the sea. Waldbusser will also highlight the many varied efforts underway to mitigate and adapt to ocean acidification.
The family-friendly presentation, hosted by the Hatfield Marine Science Center, will start at 6 pm at Rogue Ales’ South Beach location, 2320 SE Marine Science Drive. Food and beverage will be available for purchase.
