Bone up on exercise techniques

A new exercise class is on offer at the Newport 60+ Activity Center, aimed at slowing bone loss and improving balance to prevent falls.

“Better Bones and Balance” classes are now offered from 5:30 to 6:30 pm every Monday as well as from 12:30 to 1:30 pm Wednesdays and Fridays. Taught by Valerie Edmunds, the class is designed to gradually improve balance and strength to help students avoid falls and maintain independence.

The Better Bones and Balance program is a community-based exercise program developed by researchers in the Bone Research Laboratory at Oregon State University. Research shows that targeted exercise later in life slows bone loss and improves strength and balance. These classes are safe for individuals with osteoporosis and osteopenia and provide benefits for men and women of all ages.
