The summer-long Nye Beach Second Saturday Summer Celebration will continue this Saturday, June 9, with a special guest appearance by West African drumming teacher and performer Michelle Lovrich.
Lovrich, who also leads the popular Corvallis Community Drum Circle, will be performing on traditional African drums with musical partner Rita Petrosik and has promised to also lead a synchronized group drumming experience with the audience.
The event, featuring the Thunder & Lightness Ensemble and the Ocean Thunder Drummers, promises an afternoon of high-energy multicultural traditional and indigenous World Beat rhythms, featuring drummer and Newport Community Drum Circle leader Chandler Davis, Skip Floraday on congas, and the soft harmonies of Terry Filer on the Native American flutes.
Now its eighth year, this free, family-oriented event has an atmosphere has been compared to that of a friendly neighborhood block party.
Light percussion instruments are provided to encourage audience participation, and dancers are invited the join the performers onstage.
The party runs from noon to 3 pm, rain or shine, in the outdoor courtyard at Café Mundo, 209 NW Coast Street.
