The Newport Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Symphony will present back-to back Christmas performances in Newport this weekend.

On Friday, Dec. 15, the orchestra will be playing at the Sea of Lights event starting at 5 pm at Oregon Coast Aquarium, 2820 SE Ferry Slip Road.

Then, on Saturday, Dec. 16, the group will take to the stage at the First Presbyterian Church of Newport, 227 NE 12th Street, for a concert starting at 2 pm. Co-directors of the orchestra, Kathy Follett and Barbara Wilcox, will preside.

First on the program will be “Overture Strings,” two chamber ensembles of younger students of violin, viola and cello directed by Wilcox and performing a series of tunes including the famous Pachabel Canon.

Follett will then conduct the entire youth orchestra in “Pastorale” by Germane Tailleferre, a rockin’ arrangement of “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Dance of the Blessed Spirits” by C.W. Gluck, featuring local flutist Jenni Remillard. The program will close with “Brook Green Suite” by Gustav Holst.

Saturday’s concert is free and open to the public, although donations to the Youth Symphony will be greatly appreciated.
