The Oregon Coast Recorder Society will perform music old and new in Newport this Sunday, Dec. 17, at a benefit concert for the local food pantry.

Entitled “Music for Christmas,” the program includes Medieval carols “Personent hodie,” “Verbum caro factum est” and “Verbum Patris umanatur” in concert versions by Seattle composer Peter Seibert; “Midnight, Sleeping Bethlehem,” a Protestant hymn by Fong Liang Chien; “Stantipes,” a Medieval dance; an 18th Century “Noel” by Louis-Claude Daquin; three dances by a Dutch composer Willem de Fesch; an anonymous English ballad “Daphne;” and concludes with an audience sing-along of familiar carols.

Admission is by donation of nonperishable food items, checks or cash for the Newport food pantry.

The concert will begin at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Newport, 227 NE 12th Street.

The Oregon Coast Recorder Society rehearses every week and is open to recorder players or other musicians interested in early music. For more information, call 541-961-1228 or go to www.coastrecorder.org.
