May fun with the Mikado
You’ll find three little maids from school, light and airy madrigals and other springtime diversions this Friday, May 9, at the Lincoln Community Chorus’ spring concert. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Peter the Fisherman Lutheran Church, 1226 SW 13th St. in Lincoln City.
The chorus is directed by Robert Herman, with guest director Nita Arant and accompanist Paul Beard. Roger Robertson will be master of ceremonies. The chorus, soloists and guest singers will perform madrigals, music from “The Mikado,” and selections of Americana. The Taft High School chorus will also perform. Admission is free. For further information, contact Robert Herman, 541-994-4317 or J.J. Hendricks, 541-994-5468.

Dancing for Mom: That’s just ‘Kidstuff’
It may be called “Kidstuff,” but the Mother’s Day weekend concert by T.J. Hoofers will feature by performances by 200 dancers of all ages. In addition to recital performances by jazz, ballet, hip-hop and musical theatre students, the program will include Raven Chakerian and her belly dance group, Troupe Bellyssimo.
Heidi Cabal’s adult tap class will be showing off their musical comedy and fancy footwork. The T.J. Hoofers Inc. Jazz Line, directed by Dance! And All That Jazz leader Teri Jernigan, will open and close the show.
The Kidstuff show will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 11, at the Newport Performing Arts Center. Sunday’s show will offer flower sales and a silent auction in the lobby of the PAC. For reserved seats, call 541-265-ARTS.

Don’t be a stranger at ‘The Foreigner’
It’s a quiet fishing lodge in Georgia, some time in the 1960s. A frequent guest, “Froggy” LaSeur, introduces the staff to a man he says can’t speak English. But the truth is, Charlie can: he’s just pathologically shy.
What Charlie learns through this fib, and the messes he finds himself in, form the basis to one of funniest plays on the community theater stage: “The Foreigner,” by Larry Shue. It opens on May 2, courtesy of the The Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts, at the Barn Community Playhouse, 12th St. and Ivy in downtown Tillamook.
“The Foreigner” plays Fridays and Saturdays through May 17 at 7 p.m.
Doors open one-half hour prior to curtain. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or at Diamond Art Jewelers, 307 Main Ave., 503-842-7940. For details, head to tillamooktheater.com.

Can you smell the ‘Magnolias’ yet?
“I don’t trust anyone who does their own hair. I don’t think it’s natural,” says the character Truvy Jones in Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias, ” opening this weekend at Theatre West in Lincoln City.
Fortunately for the audience, nobody does their own hair in “Steel Magnolias.” The characters all make their way into Truvy’s hair salon, where Southern-style wisecracks and sweet stories are teased to perfection. Starting on May 8, the Theatre West production plays at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through May 31 on the Jack Coyne stage, 3536 SE Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (62 and up) and students. Group discounts are available. The box office is open on show days starting at 2 p.m. Or, call 541-994-5663 and leave a message, and a volunteer will call back to confirm. For further details, head to theatrewest.com

Audrey II is hungry for some VIPs
You have one more chance to see the Taft High School 7-12 performance of “Little Shop of Horrors,” which opened May 1 in Lincoln City. This Friday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m., they’ll close the musical production with a special “VIP” performance. Tickets, $8 at the door, include light appetizers.
“Little Shop of Horrors,” is the first play produced at Taft since the school encompassed the lower grades, and features performers from grades 8 to 12. Director Barton Howe chose to use the off-Broadway show version of the musical, rather than one that follows the film version with Rick Moranis. The musical features book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken.
The actress cast as Audrey II is Melissa Sexton, playing alongside Casey Kusz, Kaity Curry, Jace Schwartz, Summer Cadwell, Ashlee Casper, Eva Long, Kris Halleman and Paul Wilhelmi.
Catch ‘Little Shop’ at Taft 7-12, on SE Spyglass Ridge Drive in Lincoln City.

Talent runs in the family
The Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program will bring another afternoon of eclectic entertainment to the South County community: the 12th annual Yachats Family Talent Show. This afternoon of fun and frolic is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, at the Yachats Commons, W. Fourth and Hwy. 101.
Musicians, dancers, actors, joke-tellers, jugglers and more will be hitting the stage. To learn more, or to sign up your act, call 541-547-4599. Family acts – including moms and kids, in this Mother’s Day show — are especially encouraged.

Latin rhythms shake up Commons
Enliven your Friday with South American rhythms, courtesy of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra, as they bring their spring concert to the Yachats Commons, 7 p.m. Friday, May 9.
The program will focus on Latin rhythms from Cuba and Brazil, and their influence on American popular music. Soprano Eileen Beck will sing “The Boy From Ipanema,” “The Shadow of Your Smile,” and three selections by Cole Porter. Orchestral works include music by Mancini, Lecuona, Alpert and Florence composer, Charles Perkins. OCCO conductors Robin DeVour, John Dodge and John Monks will direct the orchestra.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Newport Performing Arts Center, at RainDogs in Yachats and at the door. Seating will be informal (tables and chairs) with food and beverages available, catered by Drift Inn. For details, head to occo.ws or call 541-997-6770.
