"Perseverance"

Since the beginning, even before the wagon trains, African-Americans have played an essential role in building Oregon. In Marion and Polk counties, they overcame the obstacles of wilderness, prejudice and isolation, helping to create a vibrant community. This film pieces together memories and forensic evidence of a genocidal "scorched earth" campaign in Guatemala in 1982. The military is believed to have exterminated nearly 200,000 Maya people, but the quest for justice finally reached its tipping point  -- after many "grains of sand" -- when perpetrators were brought to justice. The original production, in 1970, won six Tony awards, and in 2006 won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.

A competitive cooking event and fund-raiser based on the 1990s BBC show with the same name. Each chef is given a set pantry, a mystery ingredient and a time limit. Here's the twist: they'll be auctioning off sous chef and judging positions to members of the audience -- it could be anybody. A series of six Sunday seminars, presented by the Pacific City-Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce, will begin this evening with a discussion of "From Print to Pixels: The Act of Reading in the Digital Age." Cunningham is an author and historian ("The Green Age of Asher Witherow," and "Lost Son"), who ponders whether the act of reading has fundamentally changed. "Tibet: Her People, Land, Ways and Challenges"

Debra Fant, a longtime resident of Lincoln County and a registered nurse, spent a month in Tibet in 2006. She returned with an insatiable curiosity about all things Tibetan and is deeply committed to sharing what she has experienced and learned about Tibet and its current situation through slides and conversation.
