Anne Glover

Beach Reads

[Updated June 18, 2008]

This storyteller will string you along
Lincoln County’s public libraries will continue their Catch the Reading Bug! summer reading programs by hosting professional storyteller and string artist, Anne Glover, on Wednesday and Thursday, June 25 and 26.
Glover’s engrossing stories combine elements of sign language, mind-bending string figures, uncanny sound effects, and charming characters speaking a mix of languages. Children will be shown how to create their own string games and shapes, while stories are being told.
Some of Glover’s stories are old folktales, some come from events of her childhood, and others are woven on the spot. She has appeared at countless schools, festivals, and conferences across the continent. She has also performed her original stories on CBC radio, in both English and French.
Anne Glover will be stringing kids along on Wednesday, June 25, at Waldport Public Library (10 a.m.), Newport Public Library (1 p.m.), and Driftwood Public Library in Lincoln City (6:30 p.m.).  On Thursday, June 26, Anne will be at Siletz Public Library (1 p.m.) and Toledo Public Library (3 p.m.). All children are invited to attend one of these free programs.
Glover’s Lincoln County shows are funded by Ready to Read grants from the Oregon State Library and the Lincoln County Library District. Her lodging is provided by Sylvia Beach Hotel and Chinook Winds Casino and Resort.
For details about the reading program at the Newport Public Library (35 NW Nye St.), call Jennifer Haggerty, 541-265-3109; at the Driftwood Public Library (801 SW Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City), call Teena Nelson at 541-996-1258. For info on the Siletz library summer reading program, call 541-444-2855.

Reboot camp: Tillamook computer classes
If you’re a beginning computer user and you’d like to learn more, the Tillamook County Library has a deal for you. They’re offering free basic computer classes on Friday mornings, 9 a.m. to noon, throughout the summer.
Reference librarians work one-on-one with students, so that they can learn at their own pace and comfort levels. These 30-45 minute sessions are offered by appointment.
These classes build on skills learned in previous sessions, starting with Basic Mouse Skills. Other courses include basic Internet, Internet Search, Setting Up and Sending E-Mail, Adding Attachments to E-Mail and Using the Library Catalog and Other Online Patron Services.
To make an appointment, call 503-842-4792 or drop by the library, 1716 Third St. in Tillamook.

We are endowed by our creator with certain incredible writers
We hold this truth to be self-evident: If you’re a book lover, there are few places better to stroll and hob-nob with accomplished writers than the Northwest Author Fair Series.
The dates for the 2008 series at Bob’s Beach Books in Lincoln City have been set: Saturdays, July 5, Aug. 9 and Sept. 13, from noon to 3 p.m.
The events will take place in the plaza outside Bob’s Beach Books at 1747 NW Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City. At least three dozen Northwest authors and illustrators are scheduled to be at each fair, including Paul Linnman (KGW news anchor and author of “The Exploding Whale And Other Remarkable Stories From The Evening News”), Patricia McKillip (World Fantasy Award winner), Kurt Cyrus (illustrator and author of children’s Pacific Northwest Book Award winner “Hotel Deep”, and others) and Susan Fletcher (multiple award winning YA award winner).
Oregon favorite Ron Lovell plans to bring his newest Thomas Martindale mystery. Also on the books are Daniel H. Wilson (author of “How To Build A Robot Army” and host of the upcoming History Channel series “The Works”), Irene Radford (fantasy author AKA P.R. Frost), Carola Dunn (author of the Daisy Dalrymple mysteries), Shannon Keegan (author and illustrator of “The Legend Of The Sea Fairies”), Bill Cockrell (author of the new release “Oregon’s Covered Bridges”) and more.
For more information or to join the roster, call Diana Portwood at Bob’s Beach Books, 541-994-4467 or bobsbeachbks@hotmail.com.
