Barking Dog Farm Lincoln City
[Related story, posted July 25, 2007]
Ten years ago, Dave Schaffer had never done any gardening whatsoever. “I had mowed lawns,” he said. “Reluctantly.” But while he didn’t know much about farming, Dave knew a thing or two about food. Drawing from his experience as a chef at Salishan Lodge and Side Door Café, and dedicated to ecological sustainability, he launched Barking Dog Farm, at his home overlooking the Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge near Lincoln City. Now in its seventh season, the certified organic farm produces green beans, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, herbs and more, and sells certified organic produce from around the region, all from a welcoming stand decorated by Dave’s wife, artist Heidi Erickson. Dave brings his most popular offering, a mouthwatering mix of washed, dried leafy salad greens, to the Lincoln City Farmers’ Market. He loves to introduce customers to new tastes and techniques like apricots on salmon, or blue cheese-fig pizza. Fledgling foodie customers will tell Dave what they’re planning to make for company, and he’ll offer suggestions. “If you walk them through it, you can get people to try things they might not normally try, because they’re scared of it. Once they see how simple it is, they come back. “OK, we’re having a big dinner again next week. What are we having?” |
