Make headway in your retreat, at the Sitka Center
Between May and October of 2012, the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology will host over 100 workshops, ranging in length from one to five days, in book arts, calligraphy, collage, drawing, painting, encaustics, fiber art, food, jewelry, metal work, music, nature, photography, printmaking, sculpture, woodworking, and writing. Registration opens for Sitka Center members on February 27, and for the general public on March 12. Individuals may register, become members, or request a printed workshop catalog online at www.sitkacenter.org or by calling the Sitka Center at 541-994-5485.
Oregon’s Poet Laureate, Paulann Petersen, was inspired by time she spent at the Sitka Center. “What is Sitka? Sitka is a center for art and ecology, an artists’ retreat,” she said. “But an artists’ retreat isn’t about retreat at all. It’s about the exact opposite: excursion, headway, exploration, breakthrough, progress.  An artists’ retreat offers time and space to honor and nurture, to allow artistic work.”
Committed to expanding the relationships between art, nature and humanity, the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology is renowned for its workshop and residency programs. Exploration of the coastal environment has remained a key component to the center’s vitality.  Located near Cascade Head, with views of the Pacific Ocean, the Sitka Center offers a place “where artists, writers, scientists, and musicians of all abilities and backgrounds come to nourish and inspire their creativity which ripples out into our world making it a brighter place for all.”

Is a contest entry in the cards for you?
The Driftwood Public Library in Lincoln City will be using new library cards this spring. What will they look like? That’s up to you.
The library is holding a contest, in which patrons may submit artwork that will be used on the new cards.
All Driftwood patrons currently residing in North Lincoln County (from Depoe Bay to the Tillamook County line) are eligible and may enter according to one of two age categories: “12-and-Under” or “Over 12.” The contest will run through Feb. 22, and contest rules and forms can be picked up at the library or from the website at, driftwoodlib.org.
Library users will need new cards, because the lending network is about to change. The navy blue cards the library is using now will be obsolete once those changes are in place.
Any questions about the contest may be addressed to the circulation supervisor, Ken Hobson, at 541-996-1242 or kenh@lincolncity.org.

Also this weekend, Feb. 24 to 26, YAA holds its annual fundraiser. Running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event raises funds for scholarship programs. Masks featured in Toledo silent auction
The Toledo Arts Guild has announced an exhibition and silent auction fundraiser at the new SolaLuna Studios in Toledo on Saturday, March 3.
The silent auction will feature the all-white paper sculptures which were conceived and designed by Guild member Sarah Gayle of SolaLuna Studios. These unique sculptures served as masks and props for the mythical creatures of the Red Octopus Theatre Co.’s production of the Native American creation story, “The Woman Who Fell From the  Sky” (see story, page 9).
The objects were constructed by the Toledo Arts Guild members over a three-month period.
The evening event on March 3 will feature Guild musician Deborah Kerr playing classical guitar along with catering by Guild members Cliff and Kate Brown, owners of La Maison in Newport. Refreshments from Holy Toledo will be available at the event, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m.
SolaLuna Studios is located on the hill above Toledo Feed & Seed, at 750 NW Forestry Rd. For details or to review some of the gallery pieces that will be for sale, visit solalunastudios.com/guild.
